Charity Yorkshire Cancer Community has re-launched its popular t-shirt competition to encourage cancer messages to be spread as far as possible.

Following the success of last year’s competition, cancer champions are being urged to take a short video clip of themselves in an unusual location, wearing their cancer SMART t-shirt saying ‘hello from……’

Cancer champions are volunteers, and whilst some have had a cancer diagnosis, others have family members or friends living with cancer.

Some visit events and galas, running an information stand and chatting to passers-by about the key messages contained in the word SMART, whilst others choose to raise awareness in their workplace or at a community group where they volunteer.

Dr Stewart Manning, Chair of the Yorkshire Cancer Community, said: “Cancer champions are the heart of the campaign, showing that spreading the message of cancer prevention and early detection can be done anywhere – whether you’re at work, on holiday or out and about.

“Every conversation you start and every person you reach brings us one step closer to a cancer SMART community.”

SMART, developed in a partnership between the Yorkshire Cancer Community and West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance, stands for:

S – Screening saves lives by prevention and early detection

M – Making cancer an everyday conversation

A – Awareness of unusual and persistent changes

R – Reduce risk with a healthy, active lifestyle

T – Take action now against cancer

The competition runs until December, with cash prizes up for grabs for the most novel location.
