What is SACT?
Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) is the use of drugs to treat or control cancer. This includes cytotoxic chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy or a combination of these.

What is a SACT Nurse?

SACT (Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy) nurses are specially trained registered nurses who play an important role in safely delivering cancer treatments to patients

What you'll do

As a SACT nurse, you will:

  • Administer systemic anti-cancer treatments safely and confidently
  • Provide information and emotional support to patients
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Support patients holistically, responding to their individual needs
  • Be a key contact for patients during what can be a challenging time

Who can become a SACT Nurse?

To become a SACT nurse, you’ll need to be a registered nurse (NMC).

Many SACT nurses come from backgrounds in general nursing, acute care or oncology - but previous cancer care experience isn’t essential.

You’ll receive structured training and mentorship, including:

  • Competency development in IV administration, cannulation and venepuncture
  • Completion of the UKONS SACT Passport
  • Supervised hands-on experience in delivering treatments

Not yet a registered nurse?
Start with a nursing degree - typically requiring 2-3 A-Levels (including Biology) or an equivalent Level 3 qualification.

Key skills you'll need

  • Excellent communication - you're someone patients can rely on
  • Attention to detail - safety is critical in delivering treatments
  • Compassion and resilience - supporting patients at every stage
  • Ability to prioritise, problem-solve and stay calm under pressure
  • Willingness to keep learning - including advanced clinical skills

Where you'll work

SACT nurses are based in hospital day units, oncology wards and sometimes mobile chemotherapy units.

Some services may involve weekend working but generally do not require night shifts.
