A video highlighting the key role of SACT cancer nurses has been produced by West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance.

SACT (Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy) nurses are specially trained, registered nurses who play a significant role in safely delivering cancer treatments to patients such as immunotherapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

It was developed in partnership with Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance, with assistance from various hospital trusts. The video features six nurses from across the West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and Humber region all sharing their passion for this specialist, rewarding role.

The video aims to raise the profile of the SACT nurse amidst concerns from organisations such as the Royal College of Radiologists about a shortage in oncology departments across the UK – affecting the delivery of systemic anti-cancer therapies to patients.

In recent years, demand for SACT has surged with the rate of treatment delivery rising approximately 6-8% per year. At the same time, advances in drug discovery have led to a rise in the number of treatments available on the NHS as well as the complexity of these treatments.

SACT nurses’ roles involves:

  • Administering systemic anti-cancer treatments safely and confidently
  • Providing information and emotional support to patients
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Supporting patients holistically, responding to their individual needs
  • Being a key contact for patients during what can be a challenging time

Whilst many SACT nurses come from backgrounds in general nursing, acute care or oncology, previous cancer care experience is not essential. They are based in hospital day units, oncology wards and sometimes mobile chemotherapy units.

Husna Munir, Project Manager for Workforce at West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance, who developed the video, said: “This is a great example of cross-Alliance collaboration with Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance, bringing together nurses’ contributions to help raise awareness of SACT nursing as a career.”
